COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The theme for Earth Science is systems. The Earth Science Core emphasizes
“Systems” as an organizing concept to understand life on Earth, geological change, and the interaction of
Atmosphere, hydrosphere and biosphere. Earth Science provides students with an understanding of how
the parts of a system work through the study of the Earth’s cycles and spheres. Earth’s place in the universe as
well its internal structure, tectonic plates, atmospheric processes, and hydrosphere are explored to help
understand how Earth science interacts with society
MATERIALS:
NOTEBOOK (this notebook must be for this class only; I will expect you to keep all notes from the whole year).
Pencil or pen
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTATIONS:
Each student is expected to behave in an appropriate manner fit for a public classroom, and will be held accountable for their actions and behavior while in class.
Classroom behavior and expectations can be summed up into one word: RESPECT. This word has a three-way application:
1. Be in your seat when the bell rings
2. Be prepared to work
a. This includes providing your own paper, pen or pencil and science notebook daily.
b. I will not provide any writing utensils for your class.
c. I will not allow you to head to your locker after class as started.
3. Have your work finished when it is due. If you need help, get to know your resources so that you can be prepared before class starts.
4. No talking while teacher is talking or while another member of your class is participating in class discussion.
5. Listen and follow instructions.
6. Keep your hands to yourself and your own belongings.
Classroom Rules:
1. Do not talk when the teacher is talking.
2. Talk only at appropriate times.
3. No writing on the desk, cabinets, books, etc.
4. Be in your seat when the bell rings.
5. NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES ARE ALLOWED TO BE OUT DURING CLASS TIME.
CLASSROOM SAFETY:
Respect school property and lab equipment. Any broken items will be assessed a fee for replacement and inconvenience.
a. For the safety of you and others, please follow the instructions and special rules given prior to the lab.
b. Failure to comply with these will result in the LOSS OF LAB PRIVILGES for the day. Lab privileges may be lost for the
serious offenses such as mishandling something or endangering yourself or others etc.
c. Refrain from touching the cabinets and defacing school property such as desks and chairs. This is considered vandalism
and will be dealt with appropriately. Consequences: cleaning classroom during advisory or after school and/or fines.
d. Be appropriate.
DISCIPLINE:
1. First offense: verbal warning
2. Second offense: Parent notified
3. Third offense: Parent will need to sit in class with you for one to two class periods.
4. Fourth offense: Removal from classroom.
I may skip a step if I feel it necessary and appropriate. I may have the students stay after class and clean desk and etc.
HOMEWORK:
Due to the hands-on nature of science, many of the assignments in this class will be completed and turned in the same day. In cases where assignments are of a longer nature (ex: papers, lab write-ups), it may be necessary for students to finish the assignment at home and turn it in the following day. Occasionally, students will be asked to complete extended assignments (such as science projects/reports) at home to be turned in on an assigned due date. This does not mean that there will be no-homework! There will be plenty of times throughout the year that you will have homework, just not everyday.
LATE WORK/MAKE-UP WORK:
Late work will be accepted for partial credit for up to 2 weeks after original due date NO EXCEPTIONS. I will post on the board when an assignment is due. You will have two weeks (14 days, not including school days) to hand in any late work.
GRADING:
TEST: Tests and quizzes are worth 40% of your grade.
ASSIGNMENT: Class and Lab Assignments and participation are worth 50% of your grade. We will be working on these daily and should be completed in class. Homework will be comprised of finishing class assignments. Using class time wisely will minimize homework, though it may not totally eliminate it.
*Lab grades will also depend on cleaning up your workspace when you are finished, working well with your lab group and completing the written work. There will be several required projects throughout the year.
(*Please remember, this is part of your letter grade.)
OTHER: This will make up 10% of your final grade. It is based on in class participation. Doing your assignments in class, helping your lab group, help clean up your lab, not playing on your cell phone, not sleeping in class.
Grading Scale: Scores are then totaled and a grade is given according to the following schedule of percentages.
100-94% = A 89-87%= B+ 79-77%= C+ 69-67%=D+ 0-59=F or I
93-90%= A- 86-84%= B 76-74%=C 66-64%=D
83-80%=B- 73-70%=C- 63-60%=D-
FOOD ALLERGY
Throughout the school year we will be doing varies labs some of these labs will require using different types of food. If your student has any food allergy you need to let me know on the space provided. If your student has any other food concerns please write it the space below about food allergy.
